Not because they intentionally mean harm. Rather because someone else\u2019s suffering triggers an impulse in us: \u201cI have to do something.\u201d And then, instead of simply being there, we start trying to fix things.<\/strong> But grief isn\u2019t a \u201cproblem.\u201d You can\u2019t \u201csolve\u201d it. What you can do, though, is create a space where someone can feel safe without having to mask what they\u2019re going through \u2014 because they don\u2019t have to prove anything, explain anything, or correct themselves. And very often, that is support.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-faq uagb-faq__outer-wrap uagb-block-feb5b937 uagb-faq-icon-row uagb-faq-layout-accordion uagb-faq-expand-first-true uagb-faq-inactive-other-true uagb-faq__wrap uagb-buttons-layout-wrap uagb-faq-equal-height\" data-faqtoggle=\"true\" role=\"tablist\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-ab7c4095\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Why do we so easily reach for advice?<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>When we hear about someone\u2019s loss, something tightens inside us. Helplessness is hard. Advice gives the illusion that we are, to some extent, controlling the situation: \u201ctell me what to do, and I\u2019ll feel better.\u201d The paradox is that this \u201cbetter\u201d is often mainly for the supporting person \u2014 not for the person who is grieving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve ever caught yourself saying, \u201cHave you tried\u2026?\u201d, \u201cIt\u2019ll be fine,\u201d or \u201cYou have to move on somehow\u201d \u2014 it isn\u2019t a reason to feel ashamed; it\u2019s rather a signal that you're trying to make sense of someone else\u2019s pain. What matters is noticing the moment it happens and returning to what truly helps: <strong>presence and listening.<\/strong> <strong>presence and listening<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-056e46cc\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Empathic listening: \u201cI want to hear you\u201d<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Empathic listening is an attitude: I\u2019m with you, I\u2019m not running away, I\u2019m not judging, I\u2019m not rushing you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Helpful phrases:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><strong>\u201cI\u2019m listening.\u201d<\/strong><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><strong>\u201cThat sounds really heavy.\u201d<\/strong><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><strong>\u201cWhat did that stir up in you? How are you feeling with all of this?\u201d<\/strong><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><strong>\u201cI\u2019m here.\u201d<\/strong><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><strong>\u201cDo you want to say more?\u201d<\/strong><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><strong>\u201cIf I understand you correctly, you\u2019re saying that\u2026 Is that right?\u201d<\/strong><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><strong>\u201cWhat do you need from me?\u201d<\/strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There is something important in these phrases: they don\u2019t try to change the other person\u2019s emotions. Instead, they say: Your feelings are real. I want to understand them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-4b35e1c6\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Dismissive listening: \u201cI want to fix you\u201d<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Dismissal can be almost invisible; sometimes it even comes dressed as care. But underneath it carries a message: your experience is too much for me \/ too hard \/ I can\u2019t tolerate helplessness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples that often hurt (even if they sound \u201creasonable\u201d):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>\u201cMaybe you should try this\u2026\u201d<\/strong> (when someone needs to be heard, not directed)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>\u201cThe same thing happened to my friend\u2026\u201d<\/strong> (shifts attention to someone else\u2019s story)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>\u201cIt could be worse.\u201d<\/strong> (compares pain instead of acknowledging it)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>\u201cOh, don\u2019t take it so hard.\u201d \/ \u201cDon\u2019t cry.\u201d<\/strong> (treats emotions like a mistake)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>\u201cYou should read \/ listen to \/ follow\u2026\u201d<\/strong> (gives \u201chomework\u201d in a fragile moment)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>\u201cIt\u2019ll be fine.\u201d<\/strong> (said when nothing is \u201cfine\u201d)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>\u201cI know how you feel \u2014 I once\u2026\u201d<\/strong> (even with a similar experience, you don\u2019t know exactly what the other person feels)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">This doesn\u2019t mean advice is always forbidden. A few steps are enough:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-1eac6fb8\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>1) Pause the urge to fix things<\/strong><\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Keep in mind that what seems like the best solution to you \u2014 or what you would do in that situation \u2014 is completely irrelevant here. Until your conversation partner asks you for advice, let those thoughts pass without holding on to them. If you feel you \u201cshould\u201d say something but your mind goes blank, simply say: <strong>\u201cI don\u2019t know what to say, but I\u2019m with you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-3956ff25\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>2) Reflect what you hear (without interpreting)<\/strong><\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of dismissing it with: \u201cI think you\u2019re depressed,\u201d try saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI hear that it\u2019s hard for you to carry this on your own.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cIt sounds like you\u2019ve been at the edge of your strength for a long time, and all of this has been weighing you down.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cIf I understand correctly, what hurts most is that after the loss, nothing is the way it used to be.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-73b6daae\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text translation-block\">3) Acknowledge emotions<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t have to understand them 100%. It\u2019s enough not to question them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cYou have every right to be exhausted.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It makes sense that you feel anger and helplessness.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cThis can really hurt.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-a23154d5\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>4) Ask what they need<\/strong>uje<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This sentence gives the steering wheel back to the grieving person: \u201cTell me what you need most right now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cDo you want me to simply be here and listen, or would you rather I ask a few questions that might help name what\u2019s going on?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWould you prefer that I just listen, or do you want us to look for some kind of solution?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-2be54caf\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">5) Give yourself permission to make mistakes<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">The good news is: supportive listening isn\u2019t about perfection. It\u2019s about the willingness to tolerate helplessness and stay \u2014 to accompany. And if something comes out awkwardly, you can come back and repair the connection, not the emotions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI think I may have sounded like I was giving advice. I\u2019m sorry. I just want to hear you.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI know I might say something awkward. If that happens, please tell me \u2014 I want to support you, not burden you.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"border-width:4px;border-top-left-radius:10px;border-top-right-radius:10px;border-bottom-left-radius:10px;border-bottom-right-radius:10px;padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20)\" class=\"translation-block\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Note<\/span>: Community and mindful conversation can do a lot, but there are situations where specialist support is needed \u2014 especially when thoughts of ending one\u2019s life appear, panic attacks intensify, or someone relies on alcohol or other substances \u201cto survive.\u201d In those moments, what matters most is safety and contact with professional help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-d87566cd alignfull uagb-is-root-container\"><div class=\"uagb-container-inner-blocks-wrap\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-e5be3865\">\n<p class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Do you want to practice this kind of listening in a safe, kind atmosphere?
