Why Is It So Hard to Talk About Grief After the Death of a Pet?
The Dom Ukojenia Foundation (Grief House Warsaw) and MAL Kasprowicza 14 invite you to a two-hour open meeting.
For many people, an animal is a member of the family, a close companion in everyday life, and one of the most important relationships in their lives. Their presence gives rhythm to our days and is woven into daily routines, feelings of closeness, and a sense of safety. When they die, we lose not only a beloved dog, cat, or other animal, but also part of the world we built together. Yet grief after the death of a pet is still often overlooked or dismissed. People who have experienced such a loss sometimes hear: “It’s just a dog,” “You can always get another one,” or “You’re overreacting.” Even when meant well, such words can deepen feelings of loneliness and make it harder to speak openly about one’s pain.
During the meeting, we will explore why the death of an animal can be such a profound loss and what it means to experience grief that is not acknowledged or understood by society. We will talk about the emotions and experiences that accompany an animal’s final days and death, how to support ourselves and others, and the importance of farewells, rituals, and preserving memories.
We will also consider how to speak with someone who has just lost an animal, how to avoid minimizing their pain, and why remembering a pet who has died is not an obstacle to gradually finding our way in life after the loss
During the workshop, we will explore, among other things:
- what grief after the death of a pet is and how it may manifest itself;
- why this kind of loss often goes unrecognized by society;
- how to support someone whose pet is dying or has already died;
- which words and actions can help and which may deepen someone’s suffering;
- the role of farewells, rituals, and preserving memories;
- how to nurture the bond with a pet who has died while learning to live without their physical presence
The meeting is intended both for people who have experienced the death of a beloved animal and for those who would like to understand this kind of loss better. We welcome animal caregivers, their loved ones, and anyone who encounters grief after the death of a pet in their personal or professional life.
No prior knowledge or experience is required. Attending the lecture does not mean you have to share your own story.
The event will be held in Polish. Admission is free. Please reserve your place.
The meeting will be facilitated by:
The bond we share with an animal does not become less important simply because others do not understand our loss ♥
